Local Learning is a project-based learning program that involves local resources, community experts, with authentic student experiences.
Allow students to be successful in a learning environment, where the culture reflects a unique learning experience that contains potential for rich opportunity. Base success on individual growth, yet seek to learn together. Foster a love of learning because of curiosity and connections to local community issues.
Goals:
Evidence based learning, where students ask the questions
Student agency in learning outcomes; individual and collaborative
Civic awareness built through community connections
Relationship building through teamwork, combined with self awareness
Part 1 Logistics: Outline of a forty hour/ four week program that provides registrations, templates, and steps to build a project based learning program involving the local community with embedded choices throughout to suit individual program needs. Logistics of staffing, parent correspondence, transportation, budget, supplies, and timelines are included.
Part 2 The Work: Provide lesson plans to conduct; gathering and documentation of evidence, cooperative learning, interview strategies, letter writing, local exploration of geography, individual growth assessments, rubrics, and civic readiness projects with specific examples.
Part 3 Celebrate the Learning: Offers methods to produce a tangible piece of learning. Create something to be proud of, with ways to celebrate the individuals involved and their collaborative accomplishments. Included are templates to communicate the work done and how to highlight individuals involved.
