How Local Learning came about...
To those interested in Local Learning;
I am Roberta Faery, the lead facilitator of RFaery Curriculum Consulting and the creator of Local Learning. This program came about as I worked with a number of middle school students struggling through the traditional expectations of school. Often heavy reading and writing assignments would weigh them down because of various struggles in school or at home. Project-based learning seemed to entice many of those students who were not finding their niche. Connecting students to their community by contributing to something authentic inspired our first project, “Lake Ontario’s Problem” book. This student created collection of questions, evidence, photographs, and awareness sold two hundred copies across New York State!
I invite you to invest your time and passion for learning into a forty-hour commitment to learn something about the local community alongside students. Be part of creating an experience that can make a difference in the minds of creative learners. The quality and organization of the program have been practiced with proven results. The lasting impact this experience has for students instills how powerful knowledge is and how a community can be impacted by the efforts of young learners.
Creating opportunities to reach those students who need inspiration in our school structures inspires me. I have earned a master’s degree in History and my New York State teaching certificate from SUNY Brockport. I have taught Social Studies for over two decades and recently earned a New York State Certification in School District Leadership from Niagara University. It is opportunities in leadership roles that have allowed me to pursue this enthusiastic endeavour.
I hope you will consider looking deeper into what Local Learning can offer your students. Please visit Local Learning’s Website and follow us on Twitter @learning_local. I look forward to discussing the opportunities Local Learning can offer your school and community.
Sincerely,
Roberta Faery
